About Morehead Cain Scholarship

The first merit scholarship program established in the United States was the Morehead-Cain Scholarship.

It was established in 1951 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was given the names of its founders, Gordon and Mary Cain Foundation and John Motley Morehead III.

The scholarship includes funding for independent research, internships, and international study besides covering all costs for four years of undergraduate study at UNC. Summer enrichment programs are also fully covered as part of the award.

The program was hailed as “the gold standard in undergraduate educational possibilities” by Mary Cain, who gave it a $100 million donation in 2007.

Presently enrolled in the program are students from Canada and several other nations. 75 students will be Morehead-Cain scholars in 2022, including ten foreign scholars from Canada, India, South Sudan, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam, as well as 34 scholars from other states and 41 scholars from North Carolina.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must be;

  1. A competitive applicant to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  2. Nominated by your high school or an affiliate program or you apply directly.
  3. On graduate high school in the school

The closing date for this scholarship application entry is on October 1, 2022.
